The description of the workshops is available now.

About NMC: NMC is an initiative that promotes sustainable development and the participation of young people in decision making at both global and local levels. Its field of action is the whole world, with a particular focus on cities. NMC’s current time frame extends to 2020.

Values: NMC adopts as reference values those express in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and as specific objectives expressed in the Millennium Development Goals and by the Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization.

Objective: NMC seek to establish a global-local environment where young people, policy makers, international organizations, private sector, civil society and media can collaborate to effectively increase the rate of global change towards sustainability, through youth participation and influence in decision making processes.

Partners: NMC is coordinated by the Puglia Region, the Italian Ministry of Youth and the Italian National Agency for Youth.

More than 30 organizations have contributed to its conception, among which the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Labor Organization, the UNESCO, the UN-HABITAT, the MDG Campaign, the World Bank, the International Alliance of Cooperatives and the UCLG (United cities and local governments).

NMC young actors: NMC is open to all young people between 18-30 years old, who are agents of change within their societies, primarily at the community level, leading innovative approaches to stimulate political, social and cultural advances related to the conference issues as stated above.

NMC 1° World Youth Meeting: in January 2010, from 19th to 21st, the first NMC World Youth Meeting for a sustainable future will take place in Bari (Italy). The gathering will launch the NMC initiative.

500 youth delegates from 90 countries of the world, together with about 1.000 youth participants will gather with 100 decision-makers and thought leaders from a range of different backgrounds and experiences, representing government, political, science, culture, international organizations, media, civil society and the private sectors, to define an action plan and a development agenda.

The Meeting will revolve around thematic workshops in which the youth delegates, decision makers and participants will dialogue, exchange experiences and propose an action plan which will include local activities at the community level with global impact. The workshops will focus on civic engagement, education, employment, environment, human safety and development, and the potential of tackling them through policy initiatives, campaigns, and youth led actions mainly at local level.

Background: The world population has been growing at dizzying pace increasingly concentrated in urban areas. The resources required to support the current development model (and its waste) is no longer tolerable. The growing gap between those who have means and those who do not, threaten the social cohesion of the majority of existing societies. Change is urgent, we must act now.

Without a strong demand of sustainability, short term interests will prevail in decision making. Young people are largest percentage of world population and will be the majority of voters, consumers, educators, social actors and decision makers for the next three decades. These young citizens are the main stakeholders for a sustainable future, yet this group and their interests are underrepresented when policies are designed and implemented. To foster change young people must be included in decision making processes. They are essential for any change towards a better future for all.

Local decisions shape our future. From housing to social programs, from water supply to transportation, from education to legal frameworks, from public procurement to information, local governments and communities’ choices are key for every possible path towards a sustainable development. Influencing local decision making can impact the course of societies.
